I have just received this from our Neighbourhood Watch coordinator and have been asked to post it on to Lost Labs as well - anything that will help keep thieves away:

Pet owners in the south East including Eastbourne have been targeted by the following scam. They receive a phone call from a company using a name such as 'Pet Care Direct' often starting with the statement "your vet has asked us to phone you because they are now too busy to deal with routine treatments", The pet owner is then offered annual vaccinations, flea
treatments and wormers at their own home for a regular monthly payment. The owner is then asked for bank or credit card details to set up the direct
debit. This approach is a scam to obtain bank or credit card details. Please
do not be tempted into giving these details - if you are approached in this
way please let us know. It is uncertain, at the moment, how pet owners
